The PEP Can is a water-resistant, mobile game resource center that is the most visible part of the School PEP Kit*. It is durable and lasts for many years even when rolled on and off the playground on a daily basis. It was created as part the Playground Enhancement Project™ (PEP) and has been extensively field-tested.
The PEP Can serves many functions:
- A stimulus for cooperative game play. Students use the PEP Can. They ask for it when it is missing, and come running when it arrives. Over half the student body (55%) at a test school self-reported moderate to frequent use of the PEP Can at the end of the first year of research.
- Efficient storage and access to game equipment. The PEP Can holds balls and cones, while 8 labeled pockets attached to the can hold smaller equipment so it does not get buried. There is "a place for everything" so students can learn to put "equipment back in its place for the next recess." Outside pockets are see-through on the front and a flap covers the opening on the back to keep out rain. You can allow for simultaneous self-service use by students, or have one person in charge of checking equipment in and out (like a librarian). Note: All are sewn with tough materials and UV-resistant industrial thread. The pocket labels can be changed out. Pockets and posters are interchangeable.
- Display of key information. Six easy-to-read posters attached to the PEP Can provide handy on-the-spot references on the playground for game planning and using pro-social skills. The posters are useful for direct teaching by game facilitators, gym teacher, school counselors, and classroom teachers. The information printed on these posters is from the PEP Games Handbook, providing for continuity of language and reinforcement of learning.
- A natural gathering place for interested students to initiate game play together. Game facilitators often station themselves next to the PEP Can to be available to assist with game ideas and equipment.
*The School PEP Kit provides the basics for jump-starting successful, cooperative game play among 400+ children ages 5-14 on school playgrounds. The School PEP Kit can also be useful at large summer camps.
The School PEP Kit includes:
- The PEP Can unit described above.
- 6 copies each of the PEP Games Handbook, Video and the Video Guide.
- 1 copy of The PEP Instruction Manual.
- Games Equipment (Please see the PEP order form for more details.)
